Best Outdoor Activities in Encinitas
La Jolla Cove
4.8 (1188 ratings)4.5 (12342 ratings)
Popular with divers, this quaint beach houses permanent lifeguard stations, picnic tables & showers.
"Built in the 1930s, La Jolla’s Children’s Pool was created as a family beach space, but since then it's been descended on by herds of seals and sea lions. Despite the pinnipeds' particularly pungent odor, tourists come in droves to see them larking around, swimming, fighting and mating. Visitors can get extremely close via a concrete platform surrounding the cove, and the seals don't seem to mind – but there's strictly no touching, feeding or selfies to be taken with the seals."

"This hike will take you through unique rock structures, and at the end, you can enjoy the sunset from the beach (a sometimes nude one). Don’t forget to check out the Mushroom House too while you’re there. More: Photo Guide to Hiking the Ho Chi Minh Trail"
Barona Creek Golf Club
4.4 (143 ratings)4.5 (23 ratings)
Golf course at Barona Resort where rolling hills provide terrain for all skills & ability levels.
"Hosp Grove was founded by a group of investors called The Hosp Eucalyptus Corp in 1908. They planted 219 acres of trees in this Carlsbad grove hoping they could be harvested & sold to the Santa Fe Railroad as railroad ties. Much of the grove has been sold off, but what remains are fun, forested trails with plenty of inclines and twists & turns."
Daley Ranch
4.7 (989 ratings)4 (42 ratings)
Conservation area featuring 20+ miles of trails for hiking, biking & horseback riding, plus views.
"After taking in some of the best restaurants in Escondido or best brunch spots in Carlsbad, head to Daley Ranch to walk off what you just ate. With over 3,000 miles of conservation area to explore, you can enjoy the natural vegetation, oak woodlands, grasslands, and more. And if you’re interested in some history, there are plenty of old buildings to explore on the property too."
"Daley Ranch has everything a hiker, biker, or runner could ask for. Some trails provide excellent views of Dixon Lake. Dixon Lake will give you immediate shade and a shoreline trail."
"Despite its informal vibe, there’s nothing casual about the quality of food on offer at the excellent Fish District. A fresh, healthy attitude to food (and a commendably sustainable attitude to sourcing) combines with a creative culinary approach to spectacular effect. In fairness, you’ll struggle to go wrong with whatever you choose from the menu, but if you want a real treat, the chowder bacon fries are as decadent as they come."
